January: The glowing garnet is all about love, luck and passion

wonderful january

By her who in this month is born
No gem save garnets should be worn;
They will ensure her constancy,
True friendship, and fidelity.

Garnet, named after the pomegranate (Latin ‘granatum’) for its colour, symbolises victory, loyalty and eternal friendship. It’s believed to be a great gem to gift to friends but then, it is also believed to ignite romantic love and passion. Guess you’ll have to gift very wisely indeed.

The garnet is a very common gemstone, found all over the world. It is supposed to be red but it is in fact found in a multitude of colours. These stones were used for various purposes from as far back as 5000 years ago. Civilizations of India, Sumeria, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, all saw garnets being used as bowls and cups, as charms and talismans, and as jewels and jewellery. The Mayans, Native Americans, African tribes and the Aztecs saw the garnet as a sacred stone that would provide enlightenment and enhance creativity in the wearer. There is even a legend that says the only light in Noah’s Ark came from a large brilliant garnet.

The garnet is believed to possess a balancing energy, providing a sense of serenity or passion as needed in the wearer. A lucky stone for love, victory and business, the stone helps the wearer gain confidence and allows them to let go of inhibitions. It is also believed to give one courage and hope. As with most precious stones, garnets too are believed to have medicinal properties. It is believed to protect the wearer from poisons and injuries, cure depression, give relief from fever and so on. Placing a garnet under your pillow is also believed to make you stop having bad dreams.

But apart from all that, the garnet is an exceptionally beautiful stone to design jewellery with. Like the many antique, Victorian jewellery that had garnets as centerpieces and otherwise, garnet pendants, rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets are sure to be the envy of many when you wear it. Moreover, the stone will go well with gold or silver or platinum. All it needs is for you to identify the many pieces you like (we’re sure you’re going to fall in love with many a garnet jewellery) and let the world turn green with envy while you dazzle in red.
